This volume is the product of a three day conference held in September 2008. The event looked at a wide variety of aspects of orchards and groves, from social, cultural and culinary to economic, ecological and conservation facets. During the late twentieth century these landscape features came under sustained and unprecedented pressure, and local varieties and diversity were forever lost. There has been something of a revival in the fortunes and profile of orchards of late, and this conference was a response to this; bringing together many new projects and campaigns with research to take advantage of the recent interest in provenance of food, and fruit. This volume has papers from contributors to the conference from a truly diverse range of backgrounds, from landscape history, ecology, conservation and tourism; a holistic look at orchards, groves and their produce.
